Ways to Renew
- Online — the fastest way to renew. Visit the DMV renewal portal.
- In person — go to a DMV office. First-time REAL ID, vision tests, and new photos all need an in-person visit.
- By mail — follow the steps on your renewal notice.
- Self-service kiosk — use a kiosk at select DMV offices. Fast and easy.
Steps to Renew
- Check eligibility — Go to the CA DMV website or check your renewal notice. Make sure you went in person last time.
- Gather documents — Get your license, Social Security number, and payment ready. For REAL ID, also bring your birth certificate and two proofs of residency.
- Complete the form — Log in to the DMV portal. Check your info and pay the $33 fee.
- Pass the vision test — If you go in person, you will take a vision test at the DMV office.
- Receive your new license — Download your temp license right away. Your new card arrives by mail in 2 to 4 weeks.

Who Can Renew Online
You can renew online if you meet these rules:
- Your license is not suspended, revoked, or expired over 2 years
- You do not need a written or driving test
- You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- You renewed in person last time. You must alternate.
- You are not getting a REAL ID for the first time

California has no grace period. Driving on an expired license is illegal the day after it expires.
- Before expiry — Up to 6 months before expiration
- After expiry — Up to 2 years after expiry. No tests needed.
- Long-lapsed penalty — Expired over 2 years? You must take the written test and vision test again. You may also need to retake the road test.

Important: You cannot drive with an expired license in California. The window only affects how you renew. It does not let you drive past your expiry date.

Not scheduling a REAL ID appointment
DMV offices are very crowded. REAL ID needs an in-person visit. Walk-ins often wait 2 to 3 hours. Book online well ahead of time.
Letting your license expire beyond 2 years
After 2 years, you can't just renew. You must take the written test and eye test again. You may also redo the road test.
Forgetting to update your address first
Update your address with the DMV before you renew online. A wrong address can delay your renewal. It may force an in-person visit.
Ignoring the renewal notice
The DMV mails a reminder about 60 days before expiry. It has your renewal ID. That speeds up online renewal. You can renew without it, but you'll need extra steps.
REAL ID Info for California
Upgrade to REAL ID at your next in-person visit for free. Bring a birth certificate or passport, SSN card, and two proofs of CA address.
