Steps to Renew
- Check your eligibility — Go to the Georgia DDS website. You can also check by phone or at a DDS center.
- Gather documents — Get your license and SSN ready. For REAL ID, also bring your birth certificate, SSN card, and two proofs of GA residency.
- Renew online or in person — Use the DDS online portal if eligible. Or go to a DDS center or kiosk.
- Pass the vision test — Take the vision test at the DDS if you go in person.
- Receive your new license — Get your temp license right away at in-person visits. Your card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks.

Who Can Renew Online
You can renew online if you meet these rules:
- You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Your license expired less than 2 years ago
- Your license is not suspended or revoked
- Your photo on file is under 10 years old
- You are not getting a REAL ID for the first time

Georgia lets you renew up to 2 years after expiry. After that, your license is lapsed. You must apply as a new driver.
- Before expiry — Up to 150 days (5 months) before expiration
- After expiry — Up to 2 years after expiration
- Long-lapsed penalty — Expired over 2 years: you retake all tests — written, road, and vision. Driving on an expired license is a misdemeanor. Fines go up to $1,000.

Important: You cannot drive with an expired license in Georgia. The window only affects how you renew. It does not let you drive past your expiry date.
