Michigan License Renewal at a Glance
How to Renew Your Driver's License in Michigan
You renew your license through the Secretary of State (SOS). Your license is good for 4 years. It expires on your birthday. For a general overview of renewal rules across all states, see our driver's license renewal guide. Here are your options and steps.

Michigan lets you renew up to 4 years after expiry. You skip retaking tests. This is one of the most generous windows in the U.S.
- Before expiry — Up to 12 months before expiration
- After expiry — Up to 4 years after expiration
- Long-lapsed penalty — Expired over 4 years: you must apply as a new driver and retake all tests. Driving on an expired license is a civil infraction. Fines go up to $100.
If you also need to update your vehicle registration, see our car registration renewal guide.
Important: You cannot drive with an expired license in Michigan. The window only affects how you renew. It does not let you drive past your expiry date.
Vision Test & Health Rules
- Vision test — Yes, at every in-person renewal. For online, you self-certify your vision.
- In-person visits — You can renew online many times if your photo is current. A new photo is needed every other cycle.
- Wait time — Online renewals take 7-10 business days. Kiosk renewals at SOS offices go through right away. Your card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks.
Common Michigan License Renewal Mistakes
Watch out for these mistakes:
Confusing standard, REAL ID, and Enhanced licenses
Michigan has three types. Standard costs $18. REAL ID costs $18. Enhanced costs $45. The EDL also works at the Canadian border. Pick the right type before you go.
Letting your license expire beyond 4 years
You have 4 years to renew after expiry. That is very generous. But after 4 years, you start over as a new driver with full testing. Don't wait too long.
Not taking advantage of self-service kiosks
Some SOS offices have kiosks for quick renewals. The wait is much shorter than the main counter. Check the SOS website for kiosk spots near you.
Forgetting to update your address within 10 days of moving
MI law says you must update your address within 10 days of a move. A wrong address can hold up your renewal. Your card may also go to the old address.
REAL ID Info for Michigan
Michigan has both REAL ID and Enhanced licenses (EDL). The EDL ($45) works for Canada border crossings. A standard REAL ID costs $18.
You need a REAL ID (gold star) to board U.S. flights. You also need one to enter federal buildings. This started May 7, 2025. Get one at your next in-person visit. See our full REAL ID deadline guide for costs and next steps.
