Steps to Renew
- Check eligibility — Visit the DE DMV site. See if you can renew online. Check that your license is not expired over 180 days.
- Gather documents — Have your license number, SSN, and payment. Going for REAL ID? Bring your birth cert and address docs.
- Complete the application — Use the DE DMV online portal or visit a DMV office. Review your info and submit.
- Pay the fee — Pay $25. Use a card online. In person, cash and cards work.
- Receive your license — Get a temp card at the office. Online? Your card arrives by mail in 7 to 10 days.

The fee is $25 for an 8-year renewal. That's about $3.13 per year. REAL ID costs the same.

Who Can Renew Online
You can renew online if you meet these rules:
- Your license is not expired more than 180 days
- You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Your license is not suspended or revoked
- You have a valid photo on file
- You are not upgrading to REAL ID for the first time

Delaware has no grace period. Driving on an expired license is illegal the day after it expires.
- Before expiry — Up to 6 months before expiration
- After expiry — Up to 180 days after expiration for online; up to 1 year in person without retesting
- Long-lapsed penalty — Over 180 days expired? No online renewal. Over 1 year? Retake the written and driving tests. Fines for driving expired can reach $200.

Important: You cannot drive with an expired license in Delaware. The window only affects how you renew. It does not let you drive past your expiry date.
